Welcome to Class 4
Class 4 Autumn
In Class 4, we have a very exciting year ahead of us. Below is a list of subjects and areas which will be the main focus of this first half term:
|R.E.||Our focus is ‘Ourselves’ where we shall explore how we belong to families. We shall think about The Church and the role that we play in it and how we can use our talents and qualities to help others.
‘Life Choices’ will be our second topic. We shall think about the choices that people make. We shall think about ‘mission’ and how the choices we make can affect the world in which we live.
|English||This half term we shall be looking at Folk Tales. Pupils will be listening to stories from County Durham retold by Adam Bushnell. These stories are exciting, dramatic and even occasionally terrifying! Pupils will be listening to these folk tales, retelling them and writing their own tales.|
|Reading||Reading is so important. Please encourage your child to read and listen to them read. We want them to develop a love for reading. As well as their home reader, please explore non-fiction and fiction texts with them that they will enjoy.
Immerse yourself in words, read a book, a newspaper, a comic or visit a library.
|Spelling||Spellings will be given out each Monday and pupils will be tested the following Monday. Spellings will contain a ‘classic’ word and a ‘wow’ word. We would like pupils to learn these and use them in their writing. They will also be given a group of words that contain a spelling pattern. Your support in helping your child practise these is always appreciated.|
|Maths||Place Value is our first focus which will include rounding, ordering numbers, negative numbers and Roman Numerals. We will then move on to look at addition and subtraction.|
|Times Tables||Times tables knowledge is key. By the end of Year 4, all pupils should know their times tablse up to and including 12×12. Again, your support in helping your child with their times tables is much appreciated.|
|Science||We shall be looking at Forces and investigating levers and pulleys.|
|Geography||County Durham is our focus. This is linked to our Folk Tales from County Durham in English. As part of this subject, Class 4 will have a school trip to Durham and visit the Cathedral as well as other landmarks.|
|P.E.||Invasion Games is the focus this half term. On Monday pupils will need their PE kit, they will be doing football. On Friday they will be focussing on Tag Rugby.|
|Music||The song ‘Living on a Prayer’ is Class 4’s music topic. They will learn this song and other related songs as well as playing other games and musical activities.|
|French||Numbers and body parts will be the areas for study in French.|
|Curriculum Fridays||Pupils will be taught in Year groups on a Friday. They will have PE, PSHE, Art/DT and Forest Schools.
This half term Year 3 and Year 4 will be in the garden – please ensure they bring along wellies and waterproofs on a Friday.
Children will be taught by Mrs Graham Monday and Tuesday and by Mr Naughton on a Wednesday and a Thursday. During these days Maths, English, RE, Science and Humanities will be taught. Friday is our Carousel Day where children are taught different subjects by different teachers.
Reading is a key skill in all areas of our curriculum. Reading records should be taken home each day and children should read a minimum of four times each week. Please sign your child’s record each time you hear them read. Your support in hearing your child read is very much appreciated.
Times tables will be tested regularly. Please encourage your child to learn their tables. Quick recall will really help them to develop and improve their maths.
Spellings will be given to your child every Monday. Spellings are stuck in the back of their reading record so that children can practise them at home. They will be tested on the following Monday. Once again, any help you give your child has a positive impact on their learning.
PE in Class 4 will take place on a Tuesday and a Friday. On Tuesday, if children can bring in their kit each week. On a Friday they will be dressed in their kit for the carousel day.
The children have written their own Class Charter. This is displayed in class and is linked to our rewards system.
Don’t hesitate to get in touch.
