Re-accreditation of the 2016-2019 International School Award

On Friday 14th October our Head Boy Tom and Head Girl Eve, accompanied Mrs Whitfield and Mrs Caton, to the 2016 International School Award Event which was held at the Tyneside Cinema in Newcastle. The reason for going to the Event, was that in the Summer we learned that Our Lady & St Thomas had been re-accredited with the International School Award for 2016 – 2019.

This means that our school has been recognised as making excellent international links and for providing an international dimension to our curriculum.  Our pupils understand about the wider world and have experiences linked to customs and traditions from countries other than their own.  They understand what being a global citizen means.

At the event we listened to an inspirational talk by Tori James who was the youngest ever female and the first Welsh woman to reach the summit of Everest.  She spoke about how she started with an interest in outdoor life which led to opportunities for travel.  Tori left us all thinking that if we want something hard enough then we should keep on trying and never give up.  The talk ended with questions from the children with the first five being given a signed copy of Tori’s book.  Eve was lucky enough to be chosen and asked a very thought provoking question, ”What was the worst moment of your expedition?” and received a signed copy of the book.

Our new certificate hangs proudly in the school entrance to show that we have been recognised as having an international dimension to our curriculum.
